Continuous Tenses

Actions happening RIGHT NOW — in progress, ongoing, not yet finished!

🏃 ✍️ 📖 🎵 ⏰
💡 What Are Continuous Tenses?

Continuous Tenses (also called Progressive Tenses) describe actions that are ongoing, in progress, or happening over a period of time. They show that something is/was/will be continuing at a particular moment.

📚 Key Idea
Think of continuous tenses like a video playing — you press play and the action is still going on. Simple tenses are more like a photograph — one click, done!

There are three continuous tenses:

Tense Time Example
Present Continuous Happening now She is reading a book.
Past Continuous Was happening then She was reading a book.
Future Continuous Will be happening later She will be reading a book.

All continuous tenses use the -ing form of the verb (also called the present participle). The helping verb changes to show time (present, past, or future).

🎨 Visual Comparison
  • Simple: I eat breakfast every day. (habit/fact — snapshot)
  • Continuous: I am eating breakfast right now. (happening now — video playing)
Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous Tense describes actions happening right now or around the current time.

Subject + is / am / are + V-ing

💡 The Pattern
Notice that only the helping verb changes! The main verb always stays in the -ing form. This makes continuous tenses easy to spot and use.
🚫 Stative Verbs (NOT Used in Continuous)

Some verbs describe states (feelings, thoughts, possession) rather than actions. These verbs are usually NOT used in the continuous form.

⚠️ Wrong vs Right
❌ I am knowing the answer.   →   ✅ I know the answer.
❌ She is loving chocolate.   →   ✅ She loves chocolate.

have (possession) → She has a car. (state)
have (experience) → She is having lunch. (action)

see (eyesight) → I see a bird. (state)
see (meet) → I am seeing the doctor tomorrow. (action)
💡 Quick Tips & Common Mistakes

🌟 Quick Tips

Tips to Remember
1. All continuous tenses use -ing — if you see -ing, think continuous!

2. To find the tense, look at the helping verb:
   • is/am/are → Present Continuous
   • was/were → Past Continuous
   • will be → Future Continuous

3. Signal words are your best friends — "now" means present, "when/while" often means past, "tomorrow" means future.

4. Remember the CVC rule for doubling consonants: run → running, sit → sitting.

5. Never use continuous tenses with stative verbs like know, love, own, believe.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

❌ Wrong✅ CorrectWhy?
She is play now. She is playing now. Must use -ing with continuous tenses
I am know the answer. I know the answer. "Know" is a stative verb — no continuous
He was runing fast. He was running fast. CVC rule: double the "n" (run → running)
She is writeing a letter. She is writing a letter. Silent e rule: drop the "e" before -ing
They was playing cricket. They were playing cricket. "They" takes "were", not "was"
I am lieing down. I am lying down. -ie rule: change -ie to -y before -ing
He will playing tomorrow. He will be playing tomorrow. Future continuous needs "will be" + V-ing
She are cooking dinner. She is cooking dinner. "She" takes "is", not "are"
🧠 💪

Memory Trick!

Continuous = "be" + "-ing"
Present: am/is/are + V-ing
Past: was/were + V-ing
Future: will be + V-ing
Just change the "be" for the time period!
