Paragraph & Letter Writing

A formal letter ends with “Yours faithfully” (if name is unknown) or “Yours sincerely” (if name is known). An informal letter ends with “Yours lovingly”, “Your friend”, or “With love”.

Three linking words: moreover, however, therefore. (Other correct answers: firstly, in addition, furthermore, also, finally, on the other hand, as a result.)

We write formal letters to officials, authorities, or strangers. Examples: (1) The Principal of a school, (2) The Editor of a newspaper. (Also accepted: Municipal Commissioner, Bank Manager, etc.)

A concluding sentence is the last sentence of a paragraph that summarises the main idea or gives a final thought. It wraps up the paragraph.

The “Subject” line is written below the receiver’s address and above the salutation in a formal letter.

Format of an Informal Letter:
1. Sender’s Address (top right/left)
2. Date
3. Salutation (Dear Riya, / Dear Uncle,)
4. Body (2–3 paragraphs)
5. Closing (Yours lovingly / Your friend / With love)
6. Name

Topic sentence: “Reading books is one of the best habits a person can develop.”
Concluding sentence: “Therefore, we should all make time to read every day, as books truly are our best companions.”

Three errors: (1) “dear” should be “Dear” (capital D), (2) “i” should be “I” (always capitalised), (3) Missing full stop after “area” (two sentences joined without punctuation).
Corrected: “Dear Sir, I am writing to you about the noise pollution in our area. I request you to take action.”

Correct order: (b), (a), (e), (d), (c)
“The Swachh Bharat Mission aims to make India clean. It was started by Mahatma Gandhi. Today, the government continues this mission with great effort. Schools also organise cleanliness drives regularly. Every citizen must do their part to keep their surroundings clean.”

Model Paragraph: Last winter, my family and I visited the magnificent Amer Fort in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The fort stands on a hilltop and looks like a golden palace in the sunlight. We went through the Suraj Pol gate and saw the beautiful Sheesh Mahal, whose walls are covered with tiny mirrors. Our guide told us fascinating stories about the Rajput kings who once lived there. I was amazed by the mix of Hindu and Mughal architecture. The view of Maota Lake from the top was breathtaking. This visit taught me so much about our rich Indian history and culture. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

Subject: Problem of waterlogging during monsoon season

Through your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the authorities to the severe waterlogging in Vijay Nagar during the rainy season. Every year, the streets get flooded even after moderate rainfall, causing traffic jams and health hazards. The drains are clogged with garbage and have not been cleaned for months.

I suggest that the Municipal Corporation should clean all drains before the monsoon, install proper drainage systems, and impose fines on those who dump waste in drains. I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate action.
